Release Date!Cover Reveal! But Wait, There’s More!

#SFWAPRO
Those of you who’ve been following me for a while know that I’ve been excited to get Two-Gun Witch out into the world. I think it’s the best work I’ve done, which it should be as my latest work. Well, after literal years of working and waiting and working some more, we have a release date! Come May 31st, you can finally read the story I’m sure you’ve been chomping at the bit to read! That’s right, not even two months! It’s been great working with the folks at Falstaff books, and I’m excited to officially join the misfit clan. For those of you who don’t know, it’s been a long and winding path to get this story to publication. It got shopped around at most of the big houses and several smaller presses, but they all passed. Which was surprising because with two exceptions, all the editors who read it, really liked it. They said they loved the world building, the characters, and that the writing was strong. One was so sure his house would pick it up that he actually started editing it. The problem came from the marketing people. Weird\Fantasy Western isn’t a genre that tends to do very well. Which is one reason I push Two-Gun Witch as historical fantasy, but don’t tell anyone. All this to say, I’m glad Falstaff had the courage to take the risk with the book, and it would be really helpful not just for me, but for other authors of niche and stranger stories if you picked up a copy. Okay, right now it would be mostly for me, but it will also help Falstaff find other cool stories.

That done, here is the official cover reveal for Two-Gun Witch! I know, you already saw a thumbnail in the post or email, just play along!

Covers are always nerve-wracking. As an author, you typically get very little, if any, input. Which I’m mostly okay with because I’m a writer, not an artist/graphic designer. But you always worry you won’t like it and even if you can provide feedback, you feel guilty or like a prima donna. At least I do. That said, I couldn’t be happier with this cover! I love the tone and feel, the small details, and, well, everything! I think Falstaff knocked it out of the park and special kudos to the artists, Susan Roddey!

But wait, there’s more! I hired Kirbi Fagan (an excellent artist) to do the first art work of Talen, and as you can see, she crushed it.

Well, I also had her do the four main characters in the story, which I’ll have available as postcards at events.

However, she also did an image of all four of them together! If you order the book from The Fountain Bookstore (they ship worldwide and details will be coming shortly) I’ll include an 11X17 print of the entire cast image. Keep in mind, the post cards can’t be lined up to create the full image, so this is the only way to get all four characters in one image! But, Bishop, I hear you ask. Why would I care about characters I know nothing about? I’m glad you asked! Because you’re a cool and culturally interesting person who enjoys art across various media! And I’ll even cover any additional shipping costs!

Also, you’ll be supporting an indie bookstore that does great things in the community and is staffed by awesome people! It’s a win-win-win! That’s three wins! Twice as many wins as the next leading competitor! (excluding Brandon Sanderson)

At this point, you’re probably close to being overstimulated, because even super cool people can only take so much awesome. So, I’ll let you look over the artwork and tell you to stay tuned for more posts about the new book!

Cover Reveal – Three Promises

It has arrived, the day you’ve been waiting for! Here is the stunning cover for Three Promises, the third installment in the American Faerie Tale Series.
ThreePromises_Cover

This is a book I’m very proud of. It’s a collection of short stories, each giving you a deeper look into some of the characters as well as answering some lingering questions. The ebook is scheduled for release December 8th, 2015, with the paperback shortly there after. I’ll be posting about an exclusive giveaway for pre-ordering the paperback. I’ve been careful to make each book in the series stand on it’s own, so you don’t need to read the preceding books to enjoy any other. It goes without saying though that you’ll get more out of the books if you do read them in order. So, if you haven’t already, there is time to read The Stolen and The Forgotten before Three Promises arrives. Click any of the links to pick them up from your favorite retailer, or signed copies from The Fountain Bookstore (who ships worldwide).

Because one of the stories is spoilery, I didn’t include the cover copy (back cover text) here. However, if you click here, or any of the previous Three Promises links, it will take you there.

Big Exciting News!

As my journey as a published author continues, I’ve hit another milestone, and one which I’m especially excited about. I’ve qualified for membership into (and as of yesterday was accepted into) The Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA)!

*insert Kermit arm flail here*

For those of you not familiar with the SFWA, they’re a professional organization for authors of science fiction, fantasy and related genres. Esteemed past members include Isaac Asimov, Anne McCaffrey, Ray Bradbury, and Andre Norton. Some of the more well known current members are John Scalzi, Patrick Rothfuss, and Chuck Wendig. Prestigious company to say the least. They’re a group who works hard for authors with programs like Writer Beware, and bringing to light instances where publishers might be taking advantage of authors. The path to publication is a tough one and it’s easy to get starry eyed. They take their roll of protecting author’s interests very seriously; that’s something I respect and support. The SFWA also nominates and votes on the Nebula award, one of the biggest awards in the genre. There are various levels of membership, each with its own requirements, and I’m thrilled to have been accepted as an active member, which is for authors and the only category which gets to vote on the Nebulas.

*another Kermit arm flail*

I don’t remember how old I was when I learned about the SFWA, but I remember how impressed I was with it, both in premise and make up.  It’s members were some of my favorite authors, with talent I could only dream of having. I dreamt of being a published author and one day joining the SFWA. Of course since then, I’ve met other authors, some of whom are members, and learned that while they are incredibly talented, they’re also genuinely nice, down to earth people. Even someone like Scalzi, who has achieved amazing levels of success is still remarkably grounded. I wrote a post about meeting him which you can read here. Sure, there are exceptions, but by and large, they’re people I admire professionally for their skill/talent, and respect personally for how they use their success to help others. To be counted among their ranks is something I take no small measure of pride in. There are also some very practical reasons I’m happy to be a member.

    1. It’s a professional organization of writers and professionals in the literary world, some of whom have been doing it for several decades. That’s a huge pool of experience and wisdom to tap into, and so far they seem quite happy to share that knowledge.
    2. I now feel a certain level of legitimacy as a professional writer. Sure I have two books published with a major publisher (three by the end of the year) but I still feel, a lot of the time anyway, like I’m not “really” a writer. It might seem odd that something so simple can have such a profound internal effect, but I really feel like a legitimate, professional writer now. Go me!
    3. I’m not going to lie. The SFWA has a suite at some events where only members can go to hang out and relax. It’s like a private clubhouse and I get to go there now! I get to sit at the cool kids table! Don’t look at me like that. I make no apologies for my inner child delighting in this fact.
    4. I got a unicorn! Wait, sorry, I was just told I wasn’t supposed to mention the unicorn. Please ignore that one.

I know for a lot of people this might seem odd. I didn’t win any awards, or get any great accolades. I was accepted into a group (which has a membership fee) with some straightforward requirements. But the fact is, for me, I had to work to meet those requirements. My book had to achieve a certain level of success before I could be admitted. Reaching that level of success, and having it validated by a group of people I respect and admire is a very cool thing.

I’ll Be at C2E2 (Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo)

Yes, Chicago, your wishes are being granted and I’ll be attending C2E2 (Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo) if you’re morally opposed to acronyms. I’ll be on the “Out of This World!” panel with Wesley Chu (The Lives of Tao) and Mike Shepherd (Kris Longknife). It’s technically a scifi panel, but The Forgotten is a genre buster, combing quantum mechanics and magic. The panel is at noon on the 26th, and I’ll be signing at 1:15. Stop by and say hi. I just might have some free swag…maybe. Some of my fellow HV Impulse authors will be there as well (but we know who you’ll really be there to see): Kelley Grant will be on the Authors of Epic Fantasy Panel on the 25th at 4pm Lexie Dunne will be on the Reinventing the Heroine panel (25th at 12:25pm) and the Gallows Humor Panel (24th at 5:15pm) Tim Lees will also be on Gallows Humor Panel (24th at 5:15pm) If you see me, feel free to say hi. It’s bound to be lots of fun.
